Summary

The first four lawyers of color at the Montgomery Bar, Herbert C. Nelson, Esquire, The Honorable Horace A. Davenport, Richard W. Rogers, Esquire and Charles Wharton Smith, Esquire, have passed on but their accomplishments should be remembered and memorialized. Francis Recchuiti, Esquire, a close friend of all four men will present his first-hand recollections and the background history as to how they came to be members of our bar. Some of these accounts are little known. In addition, The Honorable William T. Nicholas will add his personal recollections and anecdotes about all four men.
