Older adults are victims of financial exploitation in alarming numbers. Adults over 60 comprise approximately 26% of Pennsylvania’s population. The Pennsylvania Department of Aging reports an 11% increase in allegations of some type of abuse in fiscal year 2021-2022 from the previous year. Over 44,000 reports of need were received, over 36,000 investigated and close to 14,000 were substantiated for abuse. Of the substantiated case, 17% were identified as financial exploitation, more specifically close to 2400 older adults were financially exploited. This seminar focuses on the factors which lead to an older adult's victimization with a focus on the impact of cognitive decline as a contributing factor.
