Robert C. Gerhard, III is an elder law specialist, helping families protect assets from nursing home costs. He is a Fellow of The American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC), and authored the elder law treatise, Pennsylvania Medicaid - Long-term Care, which has been fully updated for 2022 and is currently in its 18th edition. This reference book is purchased annually by hundreds of attorneys. He also co-authored the Fifth Edition of Elder Law in Pennsylvania, a law treatise published in 2019 by the PBI Press, updating the chapter on Medicaid Estate Recovery. Mr. Gerhard regularly teaches continuing education courses such as Representing an Individual Entering a Nursing Home, Medicaid Spousal Protection Rules, Long Term Care, and How to Prevent Spousal Impoverishment Due to the Costs of Long-term Care. He is certified as an Elder Law Attorney (CELA) by the National Elder Law Foundation and holds Martindale-Hubbell's highest rating of "AV Preeminent" for both legal ability and ethics. He is past chair of the Pennsylvania Bar Association's Elder Law Section, and past president (2021) of the Pennsylvania Association of Elder Law Attorneys (PAELA) and limits his practice to elder law matters. He served as chair of the Montgomery Bar Association's Elder Law Committee for over 15 years and is a member of the Philadelphia and Montgomery County Estate Planning Councils. Attorney Gerhard was awarded the Excellence in Elder Law Award by the Pennsylvania Bar Association's Elder Law Section, recognizing his "superior contributions to the legal profession, and noteworthy service to the elderly." He was recognized by the National Association of Elder Law Attorneys as the Pennsylvania Chapter Member of the Year in 2019 and again in 2021. Attorney Gerhard served as co-chair of the Montgomery Bar Association's Managing Partners Committee from 2019-2020.
