We are saddened to learn of the passing of longtime member Marie Patterson. Marie was past chair of the MBA Family Law Section and formerly served on the Board of Directors. Born and raised in Philadelphia, she was a graduate of West Catholic High School for Girls graduating in 1958 after which she attended Rosemont College. Taking a brief hiatus from her college career to raise two daughters in Haverford, she returned to Rosemont College and graduated in 1976. Marie was truly a lifelong learner graduating Magna Cum Laude with a history degree. She spent several years following her graduation working for the US Government and then joined Robert Bruce Realty after receiving her PA real estate license. Her passion for learning continued when in 1983 she decided to take the LSAT’s and go back to school yet again. She attended Villanova University, Charles Widger School of Law, graduating in 1986.
Marie continually gave back to her community as a volunteer providing free legal counsel at The Women’s Resources Center in Wayne for multiple years. Marie worked tirelessly with the Montgomery Child Advocacy Project; it is estimated that she helped over 150 children in the program and was honored for her Pro Bono work by Montgomery County. Marie was a longtime pro bono volunteer for Legal Aid of Southeastern Pennsylvania (LASP), taking two to five cases from LASP on an annual basis. The cases she accepted were always family law cases, often difficult, and demanding substantial time and going on for lengthy periods of time. She was recognized and Awarded The Pro-Bono Service Award from The Pennsylvania Bar Association in 2011.
